Research and Development
With 12+ years of experience in industry working throughout the supply chain from fibre and yarn to woven production and finishing, Alice Timmis has project led research projects and developed a portfolio working with unproven textile waste to produce new commercially viable yarns and fabrics.
Examples of projects:
For 18 months, through University of the Art's BFTT creative R&D project, Alice project led the development of a collection of high-quality pre- and post-consumer wool and cashmere yarns and woven textiles, alongside a unique R&D consultancy service to advise brands on how they can deliver circular approaches for valuable waste streams. iinouiio Ltd is a textile recycling business based in Yorkshire. As a result of the R&D project, iinouiio provides a scalable service to transform textile manufacturing waste, and pre- and post-consumer waste into high-value commercially viable products.
Bio-Inspired Textiles is an interdisciplinary research project that sits at the intersection of biology, material science and textile design to enhance sustainable and circular practice, established by Professor Veronika Kapsali.
As an expert maker on the project, Alice explored how to make adaptable textiles that 'fit-to-size'.
House of Tengri is a London-based design house, building a new global community to bring sustainable fibres to the forefront of the textile industry and redefine the norm in luxury.
Tengri Noble Yarns and fabrics are created from ancient natural fibres, sustainably sourced via a 100% transparent supply chain from remote parts of the world. These natural fibres are selected for their superior natural qualities, including warmth, luxurious hand-feel and hypoallergenic nature.
Through the University of the Art's BFTT creative R&D project, Alice project led, explored and codified existing UK heritage manufacturing techniques and new technologies that could be applicable to the creation of nonwovens from yarn production bio-waste. The project supported in-depth research, development, testing and production with UK-based industry partners.
